Frequently Asked Questions
What causes tooth decay?
Tooth decay is primarily caused by acids produced by bacteria in plaque. Plaque is a sticky film or residue on your teeth that can leave them feeling 'furry' or 'fuzzy'. These acids erode enamel, which is the hard and protective outer layer of your teeth, causing decay and exposing the soft inner layers. Tooth decay is caused by a number of factors including but not limited to poor oral hygiene, frequently consuming sugary foods and beverages or foods that can harm enamel, dry mouth, and acid reflux.
What does tooth decay look like?
Tooth decay begins in the form of discoloration, typically as a white spot where acids have eroded enamel. As the decay progresses, this white spot will turn brown or black, eventually resulting in a hole or cavity in the tooth. Read our blog to learn more about what a cavity looks like.
Can I reverse tooth decay?
Early tooth decay can be treated by fluoride treatments. However, once a cavity forms, he only way by which it can be treated is to visit a dentist for a filling.
How do I prevent tooth decay?
The best way to prevent tooth decay is to practice good oral hygiene. This means flossing and brushing your teeth twice daily after meals, showing moderation when it comes to sugary foods and beverages, staying hydrated, and seeing your dentist at least once a year for a check-up. Using specially formulated products for decay prevention that contain fluoride, like our toothpaste for sensitive teeth, hydrating toothpaste, or post-whitening toothpaste, can also help.
What makes PerioSciences toothpastes more effective for decay prevention?
Our antioxidant toothpastes use a unique, three-part system for optimal defense against tooth decay:
- Fluoride remineralizes enamel, strengthens the tooth structure, and is the most effective element for preventing decay (we use the highest amount permitted for over-the-counter products).
- Nano-hydroxyapatite is a naturally occurring mineral that works with fluoride to help teeth fight decay and repair micro-damage on the enamel surface.
- Our patented phloretin and ferulic acid antioxidant formula neutralizes free radicals that can damage oral tissues, ensuring your teeth and gums stay healthy while fighting decay.
